Ride to Cure Diabetes
Help achieve the vision of a world without Type 1 Diabetes!
THANK YOU! for supporting my fundraising effort to find a cure for Diabetes.
In November 2015, I held a fundraiser for the JDRF* (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) — a global organization striving to END Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), a serious autoimmune disease that affects millions of children and adults who are dependent on daily insulin injections to stay alive. My goal was to raise $4,000 for JDRF Research and cycle 120 kms with their team in the “Ride to Cure” in Tucson, Arizona.
We did it!
We surpassed the goal! With overwhelming support from over 70 family members, friends and local businesses in Smithers, Vancouver & Victoria, BC, we contributed $4,200 to the Tucson 2015 “Ride to Cure” campaign. The JDRF team was 250 riders strong – 56 of us riding with T1D. As a whole, we raised OVER $1MILLION to fund research to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes!
It was a sweet experience.
The ride was amazing and empowering!! I rode alongside 10,000 other cyclers — all pedalling with passion and hope for their charitable cause. I loved every minute of it – riding the rolling roads (paved!) through beautiful desert mountain landscape, on a sunny 25 degree day, reuniting with my Type 1 peeps from Diabetes Training Camp and connecting with new JDRF friends… I came home feeling heartwarmed and inspired. The experience has deepended my vow to do what I can to help improve lives and find a cure for this crazy condition. A very big heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who jumped in with both feet to support my fundraising campaign. Your contribution has already started improving lives. Why I asked.
As you may know, I have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for most of my life. Type 1 (insulin-dependent) Diabetes has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle, and there is nothing you can do to prevent it – because we still don’t know the cause. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose checking, exercise-induced fluctuation managing and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. Insulin has given Type 1 Diabetics like me the gift of life. But it is not a cure. Living on injected insulin is a complex, frustrating, sometimes scary, 24/7 challenge to straighten out a roller coaster of blood sugar highs and lows, and it comes with a greater probability of serious complications such as kidney failure, blindness, stroke and amputations. Type 1 Diabetes is on the rise to becoming an epidemic and you no longer need be a “juvenile” to get it; more and more adults aged 20-60+ are now being diagnosed with this life-changing condition.
We need a cure.
With your help, we will achieve JDRF’s vision of a world without Type 1 Diabetes. Researchers are making headway, but they are underfunded and need our support! They are competing against a mega-billion dollar industry and pressure from Pharmaceuticals to keep the focus on developing expensive gadgets to “manage” (rather than “cure”) diabetes. Thank you, again, for your support!

*The organization formerly known as the “Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation” is now simply the “JDRF” since “juvenile” is no longer descriptive of the disease. Today, a large percentage of those with T1D are diagnosed when they are adults.
